WEP & GPO: Social Security Impact for Teachers

Teachers in states not covered by Social Security (CA, CO, IL, KY, LA, MA, MO, NV, OH, TX, and others) face two potential SS reductions:

Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP)

If you worked in SS-covered employment outside teaching, WEP reduces your SS benefit. The maximum WEP reduction in 2026 is $587/month. It cannot reduce your SS by more than half your pension.

Government Pension Offset (GPO)

If you're claiming SS spousal or survivor benefits, GPO reduces that benefit by 2/3 of your teacher pension. A $2,000/month teacher pension reduces a $1,200/month spousal SS benefit to zero.

Note: The Social Security Fairness Act (signed January 2025) eliminated WEP and GPO for many public employees retroactively. Check SSA.gov for the latest on whether your plan is affected.
