Why COLA Matters More Than Most Retirees Expect

At 3% annual inflation and no COLA, a $2,625/month pension loses 45% of its purchasing power in 20 years — the equivalent of living on $1,444 in today's dollars. Even a 2% COLA cap only partially offsets that erosion.

The 2026 FERS COLA is 2.5%. FERS COLA is calculated as CPI-W minus 1 percentage point when CPI-W is between 2–3%, the full CPI-W when under 2%, and capped at 2% when CPI-W exceeds 3%. CSRS receives the full CPI-W adjustment with no reduction.

Nominal Value (Year N) = Starting Benefit × (1 + COLA Rate)^N Real Value (Year N) = Nominal ÷ (1 + Inflation Rate)^N Purchasing Power Retained = Real Value ÷ Starting Benefit × 100% Break-Even COLA = Inflation Rate (to maintain real value)
